Visiting Artist Workshop: Harnessing Chance FULL

Instructor: Andrew Polk
This workshop will present methods of flowing and hurling paint. The development of intuitive and improvisational skills will be a key outcome along with an increased appreciation for the physical characteristics of acrylic paint. The workshop will explore the techniques and concepts of relinquishing control to exploit chance, happenstance and serendipity in painting. Workshop participants will be introduced to a sampling of relevant artists, learn about underlying philosophies, and produce one or more paintings.
Nationally recognized painter and printmaker Andrew Polk employs a variety of media and techniques to create his stunning work. For more than three decades, his work has been exhibited throughout the United States. Polk is currently a Professor of Art at the University of Arizona.

Easter Egg Family Dye Day

All ages are welcome. Bring your own eggs and we'll show you how to dye them in a rainbow of natural colors. Learn how to create lively designs on your eggs using rubber bands, masking tape or wax. Discover how common foods found in your kitchen can yield a range of beautiful hues.
Mixed Media Drawing

Instructor: Suzanne King Randall
This exciting workshop will cover the elements of composition using graphite paint and oil bars. Brushes will be used to refine and smooth line. Use of color will be explored in the creation of either abstract or representational work. Set ups will be available to help define the composition allowing the artist freedom to express simply throughout the painting process.
Spinning 101
Saturday, April 10| 1- 4 pm

Instructor: Donna Hilton
Learn the ancient art of hand spinning. Working with wool fibers, students will learn drafting and plying techniques for creating yarn on the drop spindle. Wheel spinning will also be introduced. Students are welcome to bring their own spinning wheel.
Painting with Earth Pigments

Earth pigments have been used by many peoples circling the globe to pattern cloth, color temple walls, and ceremoniously paint their bodies. Earth pigments are the most stable of all natural color and are permanent on cloth when used with a binder. Focusing on a Japanese process of preparing the cloth with soy milk, we will explore color palettes using many different earth pigments, paint patterns on cloth, and provide instruction for preparing your own earth pigments.
Visiting Artist Workhop: Tricks of the Trade
Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25 | 9 am - 4 pm both days

Instructor: David Hendley
The workshop is designed for people with experience working with clay, who are interested in trying some new ideas and learning some new skills. In over 30 years as a studio potter, David Hendley has developed techniques that save time and stimulate creativity. Homemade tools play an important part in many of the “tricks”, so demonstrations and ideas for making simple tools will be part of the workshop. The emphasis will be on functional vessel forms such as plates, bowls, and cups. Throwing on the potter’s wheel, hand building, and extruding with the clay extruder will be combined in much of the work. David will also explain and demonstrate his unique glazing and decorating style, using slip-glazes and over glaze decoration.
Weaving in Your Hand
Saturday, May 8 | 1- 4 pm

Instructor: Elia Woods
Learn to weave exquisite little bags using the simplest of materials. Using cardboard, pins, and a variety of specialty yarns, weave one or more tiny bags during class, then take your loom home with you to make more.
