Clay Classes

Beginning Pottery 

Mondays | 7 - 9 pm | Fall Session:  $130

Instructor: Phil Horton

Beginning students are introduced to basic clay forming, glazing and firing techniques.  Phil starts by orienting the class to the properties of clay through handbuilding projects using pinch, coil, slab and extruder methods.  Next students move to the potter's wheel where they learn to create cylinders, bowls and plates.  Finlly surface design, glazing and firing are introduced.  Through a combination of demonstrations and individual instruction everyone is allowed to progress at their own pace.

Phil has been an art instructor for more than three decades and is also an associate member of Paseo Pottery.

Intermediate Pottery 

Tuesdays | 7 - 9 pm | Fall Session: $130

Instructor: Chuck Keeler

Intermediate pottery is designed to help students with some experience advance to the next level.  Chuck encourages further exploration in both handbuilding and wheel throwing methods.  The basic cylinder, bowl and plate forms are built upon to create more complex pieces.  Advance surface design, glazing and firing methods such as raku are also introduced.

Chuck served as an art teacher for 29 years in the Oklahoma City Public Schools system. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Oklahoma City University for 25 years.

Advanced Pottery

Wednesdays | 10am - Noon |   Fall Session: $130

Instructor:  Pat Travis    

This class is designed for students who have mastered centering and pulling on the wheel and/or basic handbuilding methods.  Instruction focuses on the creation of complex forms and multi plart vessels.  Advanced glazing, surface design and firing methods are also covered.  Self direction by students is expected at this level with instructors sharing advanced techniques and helping individuals to refine skills.

Pat is an Oklahoma City native with seven years of pottery experience who specializes in throwing and altering techniques.  She enjoys creating classic pottery and then altering her masterpieces with texture to add dramatic flare.

Advanced Pottery

This class is designed for students who have mastered centering and basic pulling techniques and/or basic handbuilding methods.  Instruction focuses on the creation of complex forms and multi part vessels. Advanced glazing, surface design and firing methods are also covered.  Self direction by students is expected at this level with instructors sharing advanced techniques and helping individuals to refine skills.

Matt holds a BFA in ceramics from the University of Central Oklahoma. He has apprenticed under Collin Rosebrook for the last four years and has taught at both Artzplace Oklahoma and Paseo Pottery.

Handbuilding and Surface Exploration

Tuesdays | 10 am - Noon |  Fall Session: $130

Instructor: Mike Paluska                                                                   

Designed for intermediate and advanced students, this class focuses primarily on handbuilding and surface design.  Extruder and slab techniques are covered along with some alteration using the wheel.  Unique surfaces are created through the introduction of advanced glazing and texture methods.  Mike guides the class through a new project each session with a focus on creating original work.  

Mike is a talented clay artist with ten years of experience. His expertise includes hand building, throwing, glaze mixing and application.  His work can be seen at Wilshire Garden Market.

Figurative Sculpture

Wednesdays | 7 - 9 pm |  Fall Session:  $160 (model fee included)

Instructor: Glen Thomas                                                                            (supplies and clay not included)

This class is for both beginning and experienced artists who are interested in the human form as the basis for artistic expression.  Using the additive and subtractive capacities of clay, students explore anatomical and structural issues with an emphasis on understanding mass volume, proportion, center of gravity, balance and negative space.  Nude models are used for this class.

Glen has a bachelor’s degree in art and has completed graduate work at the University of Central of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University. His work has recently been at City Arts Center and 50 Penn Place.
